But phones are just the beginning.
We humans are manufacturing machines at a scale that’s almost impossible to comprehend. From pocket-sized supercomputers to billions of websites and trillions of emails, here are 15 insane fun facts (with the latest 2025–2026 data) that prove we’re living in the golden age of stuff. Buckle up — these numbers are wilder than any sci-fi movie.
Between 2009 and 2024 alone, manufacturers shipped 18.74 billion smartphones. Add in the 1.26 billion units shipped in 2025, and we’re comfortably past 20 billion cumulative. That’s not “in use” — that’s actually built and sold. For context: the entire human population only hit 8 billion in 2022. We’ve made enough smartphones to give every person who has ever lived since the year 1800 their own device… with plenty left over.
If we include old-school feature phones (the indestructible Nokia bricks your parents loved), the total jumps to nearly 29 billion units shipped between 1992 and 2022 — and that number has kept climbing. In some developing countries, feature phones still outsell smartphones in certain segments. We literally built enough phones to circle the Earth thousands of times if you stacked them end-to-end.
Gartner’s latest numbers show 270 million personal computers (desktops, laptops, workstations) were shipped worldwide in 2025 — a 9.1% jump from the year before. That’s roughly 740,000 PCs every single day. Since the PC revolution kicked off in the 1970s, the cumulative total easily exceeds several billion units. Your childhood desktop? It has millions of digital siblings still humming in offices, schools, and gaming setups around the globe.
As of 2025, there are approximately 1.645 billion passenger vehicles on the roads worldwide. That’s one car for every five humans. Annual production now hovers around 93 million motor vehicles. Historians estimate the total number ever manufactured since Karl Benz’s 1886 Patent-Motorwagen is well over 3 billion (many have been scrapped, but the factories never stopped). China alone pumps out tens of millions every year.
There are 8.93 million smartphone apps in existence across all stores right now. Google Play alone hosts over 2.2 million, Apple’s App Store another 2.1 million, and thousands more pop up daily. Every day, developers publish roughly 2,000 new Android apps and 2,500 new iOS apps. We’ve built an entire parallel universe of software that lives inside our pockets.
As of early 2026, the web contains 1.34 billion websites — up from just 17 million in the year 2000. Only about 15% are actively maintained (around 200 million “live” sites), but the total number of domains registered and pages created is mind-boggling. Every minute, thousands more are born. You’re reading one right now — and there are over a billion others just like it.
Google’s 2010 count hit 129.8 million unique titles. Fast-forward with UNESCO’s estimate of 2.2 million new books published every single year, and we’re now looking at roughly 158 million books in human history (not counting self-published e-books or audiobooks without ISBNs). That’s enough paper to stretch to the Moon and back multiple times.
In 2026, humanity fires off 392.5 billion emails daily — that’s 4.6 million emails every second. By 2027 it’ll hit 408 billion per day. Yes, half are spam, but the sheer volume is insane. Since email became mainstream in the 1990s, we’ve sent trillions upon trillions of messages. Your inbox is just one tiny drop in an ocean of digital mail.
YouTube currently hosts more than 4.3 billion videos (some estimates go as high as 14 billion when including every upload ever). Creators upload 720,000 hours of new video every single day — that’s 82 years of content every 24 hours. Every minute, hundreds of hours are added. We’ve manufactured an endless library of moving pictures that would take a human lifetime to watch just a fraction of.
The world’s biggest code platform now has more than 420 million repositories (public and private combined), with some reports putting the total north of 800 million when counting forks. Over 150 million developers have contributed more than 5 billion times in recent years. Every major app, website, and AI model you use started life as code in a repo just like these. Software isn’t “written” anymore — it’s manufactured at industrial scale.
We live in the most productive era in human history. Factories never sleep. Code never stops compiling. Every second, another gadget, website, video, or email joins the pile.
The next time someone complains that “they don’t make things like they used to,” show them these numbers. We make more things — faster, cheaper, and in quantities that would have seemed like pure science fiction just 20 years ago.
And the craziest part? We’re only speeding up.
