Why checking color contrast is critical for modern websites

Digital accessibility is no longer optional. According to the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG), text must have a specific contrast ratio against its background to be considered readable. Failing to meet these standards doesn't just frustrate users—it actively blocks people with visual impairments, aging eyes, or even users in bright sunlight from consuming your content.

Our online color contrast checker solves this by mathematically comparing the relative luminance of your foreground and background colors. It provides a score between 1:1 (no contrast) and 21:1 (maximum contrast, like black on white).

Understanding WCAG AA vs AAA

The WCAG defines different levels of conformance. Level AA is the global standard for most commercial websites and legal compliance (such as the ADA in the US). It requires a contrast ratio of at least 4.5:1 for normal text and 3:1 for large text. Level AAA is a stricter standard, requiring 7:1 for normal text, often used by government agencies and highly specialized platforms.

Extracting Palettes from Images

Brand guidelines are often delivered as flat images or logos. Our built-in image color extractor uses advanced algorithms to isolate the dominant colors from any uploaded JPG or PNG. This allows developers to instantly convert a visual asset into a web-ready, contrast-tested CSS palette without needing external design software.
