Colors are more than just visual data; they carry meaning and names that help us communicate. This tool uses a comprehensive database to match digital color codes (HEX, RGB) to their nearest standardized English names.
Digital colors are often represented by hexadecimal codes (e.g., #FF5733). While precise for computers, these codes aren't human-readable. Our tool calculates the mathematical distance between your input color and thousands of named colors to find the perfect match.
There are over 16 million possible HEX colors, but only a few thousand have standardized names. If you enter a specific hue that doesn't have a direct name, we provide the 'Closest Match'—the named color that is visually indistinguishable from your input.
Can I search by RGB values?
Currently, the tool is optimized for HEX codes and the visual color picker. However, you can use our Color Converter tool to turn RGB into HEX first.
What database is used?
We use the NTC (Name That Color) library, which aggregates color names from various standards including CSS, Resene, and others to provide accurate naming.
Why do some colors have strange names?
Color naming is often creative! Names like 'Razzmatazz' or 'Dead Forest' come from crayon sets, paint manufacturers, and historical references.
Is this tool free to use?
Yes, this color name finder is completely free and runs directly in your browser without storing your data.
